The application challenges iPhone and iPod touch players to monitor fuel use and tire wear just as Audi Le Mans teams do during races.

The Truth in 24 app is the second driving challenge Audi has introduced for the Apple devices. The Audi A4 Driving Challenge application, released last September, has enjoyed phenomenal success with nearly 3.2 million downloads to date.

The CEO of Factory Design Labs says:  ‘There’s a spirit of innovation in the Audi product lineup and marketing culture, and these games were designed to serve as the next logical step for both. We wanted to create an experience that would be similar to the challenges facing the actual Audi Le Mans drivers and the Audi racing team.’

The newest app relates to the award-winning documentary Truth in 24 produced by NFL Films and Chicago-based Intersport.

The film followed the dramatic 2008 bid by Audi racing teams to retain their dominance at the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, which has been one of the world’s premiere motorsports events for decades.

38 year old McNish was awarded both the Autosport “British Competition Driver of the Year” Award (previous winners have included John Watson, Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill) and the British Racing Drivers’ Club ACO Plate. The BRDC ACO Plate is presented annually to the highest-placed British driver in the French twice-around-the-clock sportscar endurance race. McNish and Kristensen, who has won Le Mans eight times, plus Italian Dindo Capello, scored Audi’s third consecutive Le Mans victory, which means that Audi has now won the Le Mans race eight times since making its debut in 1999.

McNish said:

“I’m extremely proud to have claimed these awards, especially after this year’s Le Mans which was one of the best races in recent history and definitely the hardest fought for a decade, while winning at Silverstone was very satisfying, but these Awards are as much for our guys at Audi Sport and Joest Racing as it is for me. Dindo, Tom and I were only one part of a great team”.

Alan McNish was recently voted the “Driver of the Decade” in the American Le Mans Series and Audi Driver magazine’s “Audi Personality of the Year” for a third consecutive year.

The Audi team suffered strong opposition from the Peugeot Nº7 driven by Jack Villeneuve, Marc Gene and Nicolas Minassian who led most the race. Triumphantly, the diesel powered Audi Nº2 driven by Tom Kristensen from Denmark, Renaldo Capello from Italy and British Driver Alan Mcnish, completed 381 laps in 24 hours in Le Mans with a 4 minutes and 31 seconds lead to win this year’s Le Mans 24 hours Race.

In this year’s tour Audi will launch their new TDI engine with the new A3 TDI Clubsport Quattro, the new Audi A3 TDI Clubsport Quattro will feature the most extreme incarnation to date of its advanced four-cylinder TDI engine. The A3 TDI Clubsport Quattro extracts an incredible 450Nm of torque and maximum power of 224PS from its 2.0-litre, common rail fuel injected TDI unit, allowing it to race from rest to 62mph in just 6.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 149mph, making it one of the stars of this year’s Lake Wortherseen Tour in Austria.

The Audi A3 TDI clubsport quattro will leave show-goers in no doubt as to its capabilities, emphasizing them both acoustically through its sonorous exhaust and visually with a series of exclusive parts mounted on the body and in the interior. Exterior components such as the large DTM-look rear spoiler and the bolt-on wheel arch extensions give the car a dynamic air, while the racing bucket seats and open gear lever gate in aluminum form the highlights of the interior. The show car is a true high-tech sports car.

Power is directed to the 20″ wheels via a six-speed transmission and the quattro all-wheel-drive system. At the front wheels, stopping power is provided by six-piston brake calipers and ceramic discs.

The Audi drive select driving dynamics system allows the driver to vary the throttle response characteristics, the exhaust sound, the level of power assistance for the steering, the cut-in thresholds for the ESP stabilization system and the operating mode of the dampers. The dampers deploy Audi magnetic ride technology, enabling them to react to changes in the driving situation with lightning speed.

Powered by the latest 2.0-litre, four-cylinder TDI engine with ultra-efficient common rail fuel injection incorporating piezo injectors

The world’s first bona fide diesel-powered sports car – the new 140mph Audi TT 2.0 TDI quattro – brings 50mpg-plus fuel economy, a 23 per cent reduction in CO2 output and EU5 compliance to the 2008 Geneva Motor Show (March 6th to 16th). Far from being just a flight of fancy, the latest TT is fully production-ready, and opens for UK order in Coupe and Roadster body styles on Thursday March 6th priced from £26,350 OTR. First deliveries are expected in summer 2008.

The ideal TT TDI engine, which not only had to complement the much-loved character of the TT but also had to fit transversely into its compact engine bay, arrived recently in the space-efficient shape of the latest 2.0-litre, four-cylinder TDI with performance and refinement-boosting common rail fuel injection incorporating advanced piezo injection technology. Launched to critical acclaim in the new A4 Saloon in 143PS form, the economical new powerhouse transfers to the TT with an upgrade to 170PS, and an impressive 350Nm maximum torque output – more than even the 3.2-litre V6 petrol model can muster.

Spurred on by a new turbo charger with adjustable vanes that allow rapid torque build-up, and by the sophisticated common rail injection system, whose advanced piezo injector nozzles can perform up to five distinct injection sequences per cycle, the new engine offers more than enough performance to dispel any lingering doubts about sports car compatibility.

Spinning freely to its 5,000rpm limit, and doing so without fuss thanks not only to its high-tech injection technology but also to refinement-boosting balancer shafts, the TT 2.0 TDI quattro Coupe with six-speed manual transmission takes just 7.5 seconds to reach 62mph. A top speed of 140mph is possible where conditions allow, and the stamina-building influence of TDI is made abundantly clear by a combined consumption figure of 53.3mpg.

The stride forward in efficiency over the outgoing 2.0-litre TDI engine also shows in a CO2 figure of 140g/km for the Coupé – over 20 per cent less than the 2.0 TFSI petrol model – and in a drastic reduction in untreated emissions of oxides of nitrogen. Improvements in combustion chamber thermodynamics mean the new engine can run on up to 60 per cent recycled exhaust that has been cooled by the radiator, and ensure the 2.0 TDI already complies with proposed Euro 5 emission limits.

Lightweight Audi Space Frame (ASF)
The impressive all-round performance of the new TT 2.0 TDI quattro is also due in no small part to its lightweight Audi Space Frame aluminium and steel hybrid body shell, which contributes to impressively low kerb weights of 1,370kg for the TT 2.0 TDI quattro Coupe and 1,415kg for the TT 2.0 TDI quattro Roadster.

The undivided attention to weight-saving also proves its worth in the comfort of the TT’s ride and the nimbleness of its handling, which in the best traditions of all higher-torque sporting Audis is backed up by quattro permanent four-wheel-drive. The space-age Audi magnetic ride adaptive damping system, employing specially developed dampers filled with a magnetic fluid that reacts to an electrical charge, will also be available as an option for driving enthusiasts who want to extract the very best from the sophisticated aluminium-rich suspension.

Standard UK specification for the new TT 2.0 TDI quattro mirrors the familiar 2.0 TFSI petrol version, offering features such as 17-inch Trapez alloy wheels, leather and Alcantara-upholstered sports seats, electronic climate control and an MP3-compatible 140-watt Audi Concert audio system with single CD drive. The Roadster adds a fully automatic electrically operated soft-top and integrated wind deflector.

“THUNDER bolt and lightning, very, very frightening indeed. “

And that’s exactly how I felt after a day behind the wheel of the world’s most powerful estate car, the RS6 Avant.

Actually it was a toss-up between very frightening and absolutely bloody fantastic, especially when I took the RS6 around a French racing circuit at speeds that should have seen me stuffed into a crash barrier.

You don’t normally associate estate cars with race tracks, but then again there is nothing normal about the 580 bhp RS6. This, as my photographer Jezza said, is one mental car.

White lightning … 580bhp will do the job!

The acceleration figures of 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 175mph don’t get close to telling you how frighteningly fast the RS6 feels.

The acceleration, using either the super quick auto gear change or the F1 steering wheel paddles, is simply electric.

And then you have an Aladdin’s cave of Audi racing technology, including the latest version of the legendary Quattro all-wheel drive. It keeps the RS6 planted on the road in a spookily controlled way, in any weather conditions.

Oh yes, and the brakes are also outstanding, which is reassuring considering the speeds you’ll be doing.

In reality the RS6 is an estate car that is actually a fully fledged supercar complete with a monster 5litre V10 twin turbo charged engine, especially for owners with a practical side.

Because unlike the rest of the supercar elite, there’s room for five people — and Ikea wardrobes will never move so quick.

Ironically, if you can resist the temptation to bury the accelerator, the RS6 has a surprisingly civilised side to its character. Switch the car’s suspension system from dynamic or sport to comfort and you can travel in the lap of luxury.

Fresh from ripping up the Le Mans racing rulebook with the diesel-powered R10 TDI, Audi is exploring the possibility of breaking yet another mould with a road-going TDI super car based on the R8. The R8 V12 TDI Concept makes its debut at this month’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, replacing the production sports car’s mid-mounted petrol FSI V8 with a 12-cylinder TDI endowed with an incredible 1,000Nm of torque.First seen in the forthcoming Q7 V12 TDI SUV, the 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 with 500PS is similar in basic concept to the R10 TDI’s 5.5-litre race engine, and delivers its colossal 1,000Nm output from just 1,750rpm, guaranteeing the effortless delivery of a 4.2-second 0-62mph acceleration time and a top speed in excess of 186mph.Despite its astonishing statistics, this remarkable engine shows the necessary restraint when it comes to environmental impact. Its fundamental efficiency, achieved through the use of an advanced common rail fuel injection system enhanced by piezo injectors, is complemented by twin particulate filters and a new state-of-the-art ultra-low emission system that ensures compliance with proposed EU6 emission limits expected to apply from 2014.   The heart of the system is a special catalytic converter downstream of the oxidizing catalyst and the particulate filter. The second component is an additional tank containing an aqueous urea solution. Small quantities of the solution, known as “AdBlue,” are injected into the exhaust system. The hot exhaust gases break the solution down to form ammonia that splits the nitric oxides into inert nitrogen and water. The system remains effective for the entire service life of the vehicle. The R8’s classic mid-engine configuration, combined with advanced Audi Space Frame (ASF) construction mating lightweight aluminium panelling to an aluminium space frame, provides the very best operating conditions for the futuristic chassis, which itself contains a high proportion of aluminium components. Audi magnetic ride The V12 TDI Concept is equipped with the advanced Audi magnetic ride adaptive damping system, which swaps conventional damper fluid for a magnetorheological fluid containing minute magnetic particles that can be influenced by an electromagnetic field. By applying a voltage to the system’s electromagnets, the viscosity of the fluid is altered by the affected magnetic particles, increasing resistance to damper movement to iron out pitch and roll when necessary, and reducing resistance at times when ride comfort is of greater importance. The system constantly monitors road conditions and driving style and reacts accordingly. A specially tailored version of Audi drive select, the adaptive dynamics system introduced recently in the new A4 Saloon, also helps to personalise the driving experience. Offering ‘Dynamic’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Race’ settings, it enables further fine-tuning of the magnetic ride dampers and the parameters of the engine and transmission. When the ‘Race’ setting is selected on a circuit, the interior instrument lighting changes from white to red and the onboard satellite navigation system displays navigation information relating to the specific circuit being driven, along with a lap timer. Supplementary information including centrifugal force and boost pressure can also be accessed in this mode. quattro four-wheel-drive reassurance Whether on road or circuit, the R8 is effectively moderated by high-performance carbon fibre-reinforced ceramic brakes, and by the legendary quattro permanent four-wheel-drive system, which by apportioning power to front and rear axles in constantly varying degrees dictated by road conditions prevents the less desirable handling traits often exhibited by powerful mid-engine, rear-drive sports cars. Additional downforce to help the quattro system suck the car to the tarmac at speed is provided by a specially developed, larger version of the production road car’s automatically extending rear spoiler, combined with a fully clad diffuser under-body and special measures such as diffuser apertures in the rear bumper. Air is not only channelled in a way that accentuates the R8’s widely acclaimed handling capabilities, but is also effectively captured by racing-derived NACA ducts within the new glass roof over the passenger compartment to cool the potent V12. The engine itself is also displayed in all its glory beneath a clear glass cover, through which special air deflectors can also be seen in the Concept. At only 684mm in length, the surprisingly compact 12-cylinder is only 166mm longer than the V8 TDI, which means that with the help of the long 2.65-metre wheelbase the sensation of space which sets the R8 apart from rivals is barely compromised. All-LED lighting technology Inside, the V12 TDI Concept is distinguishable by its additional aluminium and carbon fibre elements, and by its figure-hugging racing-style sports seats. On the outside, it is marked out by all-LED lights, enlarged inlet and outlet ducts at the front, side and rear, the modified rear spoiler and exclusive alloy wheels.

The winning Audi R10 TDI, powered by a 5.5-litre, 12-cylinder bi-turbo TDI engine, covered a distance of 3,124 miles – the equivalent to an entire 16-race Formula One season – at an average speed of almost 130mph, and was stationary in the pits for less than 24-minutes during the twice-around-the-clock race.

Scotsman Allan McNish, together with Dindo Capello (Italy), swept their R10 TDI to a successful defence of their LM P1 American Le Mans Series title – the eighth consecutive year Audi has won the North America based championship. Their 650PS Audi, delivering 1,100 Newton metres of torque, won the “blue riband” 12 Hours of Sebring and 1,000-mile Petit Le Mans races.

Furthermore Audi won the German Touring Car Masters (DTM) for the fifth time (1990/1, 2002/4/7) when Swede Mattias Ekström secured the Driver’s title in the most popular international touring car racing series for the second time (2004/7). The new generation A4 will be used in next year’s DTM which, for the third consecutive year, features a race at Brands Hatch (31 August).

“Winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the American Le Mans Series and the DTM in the same year is a fantastic team achievement,” commented Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of AUDI AG. “All Audi employees and Audi customers can be proud of our successful 2007 motorsport season.”

Meanwhile the Formula Palmer Audi series celebrated its 10th consecutive year in 2007. The single-seater cars are powered by standard Audi 1.8-litre turbocharged engines that are fitted with an innovative “overboost” button that increases power to 360bhp for an eight second burst in each race to aid overtaking.

Formula Palmer Audi has proved itself to be one of the premier training grounds for aspiring Formula One drivers. Nine FPA graduates have progressed to F1 with many more racing in premier international championships.

Tim Bridgman, from Essex, won this year’s championship title while Alex Brundle, the 18-year-old son of former Grand Prix ace Martin, completed his first full single-seater season by registering a creditable 11th place in the final standings. Alex, from King’s Lynn, plans to continue in the FPA championship next year and will spend the close-season, winter months behind the wheel of a 1.6-litre Audi A3 he recently took delivery of from Audi UK in Milton Keynes.

Meanwhile 2007 FPA series runner-up Stefan Wilson has won the prestigious McLaren Autosport BRDC Award. The 18-year-old from Sheffield is the younger brother of Justin who won the inaugural FPA title in 1998
