| Fresh from ripping up the Le Mans racing rulebook with the diesel-powered R10 TDI, Audi is exploring the possibility of breaking yet another mould with a road-going TDI super car based on the R8. The R8 V12 TDI Concept makes its debut at this month’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, replacing the production sports car’s mid-mounted petrol FSI V8 with a 12-cylinder TDI endowed with an incredible 1,000Nm of torque.First seen in the forthcoming Q7 V12 TDI SUV, the 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 with 500PS is similar in basic concept to the R10 TDI’s 5.5-litre race engine, and delivers its colossal 1,000Nm output from just 1,750rpm, guaranteeing the effortless delivery of a 4.2-second 0-62mph acceleration time and a top speed in excess of 186mph.Despite its astonishing statistics, this remarkable engine shows the necessary restraint when it comes to environmental impact. Its fundamental efficiency, achieved through the use of an advanced common rail fuel injection system enhanced by piezo injectors, is complemented by twin particulate filters and a new state-of-the-art ultra-low emission system that ensures compliance with proposed EU6 emission limits expected to apply from 2014. The R8’s classic mid-engine configuration, combined with advanced Audi Space Frame (ASF) construction mating lightweight aluminium panelling to an aluminium space frame, provides the very best operating conditions for the futuristic chassis, which itself contains a high proportion of aluminium components. Audi magnetic ride A specially tailored version of Audi drive select, the adaptive dynamics system introduced recently in the new A4 Saloon, also helps to personalise the driving experience. Offering ‘Dynamic’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Race’ settings, it enables further fine-tuning of the magnetic ride dampers and the parameters of the engine and transmission. When the ‘Race’ setting is selected on a circuit, the interior instrument lighting changes from white to red and the onboard satellite navigation system displays navigation information relating to the specific circuit being driven, along with a lap timer. Supplementary information including centrifugal force and boost pressure can also be accessed in this mode. quattro four-wheel-drive reassurance Additional downforce to help the quattro system suck the car to the tarmac at speed is provided by a specially developed, larger version of the production road car’s automatically extending rear spoiler, combined with a fully clad diffuser under-body and special measures such as diffuser apertures in the rear bumper. Air is not only channelled in a way that accentuates the R8’s widely acclaimed handling capabilities, but is also effectively captured by racing-derived NACA ducts within the new glass roof over the passenger compartment to cool the potent V12. The engine itself is also displayed in all its glory beneath a clear glass cover, through which special air deflectors can also be seen in the Concept. At only 684mm in length, the surprisingly compact 12-cylinder is only 166mm longer than the V8 TDI, which means that with the help of the long 2.65-metre wheelbase the sensation of space which sets the R8 apart from rivals is barely compromised. It features Adaptive Audi drive select system with integrated ‘efficiency’ mode that reduces fuel usage by around 20 per cent and even Internet-based satellite navigation using Google Earth functionality! plus an ternet radio facility.
Sun-drenched Los Angeles and snow-carpeted alpine Bavaria provide the inspiration for the Audi Cross Cabriolet quattro concept car, which makes its debut on Press Day at the 2007 L.A Auto Show (November 16-25, 2007).
Powered by the world’s cleanest diesel engine, and combining the sun worshipping potential of a classic cabriolet with the mountain-scaling agility of a quattro-equipped ‘off-roader’, the Cross Cabriolet quattro could form the basis of a future SUV model from Audi.
Deriving its fundamental chassis and drivetrain architecture from the modules used by the A5 coupe and new A4 saloon, and covering a similar ‘footprint’ on the road, the 4.62-metre long Cross Cabriolet quattro is powered by an even more efficient version of the 3.0-litre, 240PS V6 TDI engine incorporating a new ultra low emission system. Mounted longitudinally, the world’s cleanest diesel unit combines the benefits of state-of-the-art common rail injection with piezo crystal technology, exhaust gas recirculation and an exhaust after-treatment system. Using a special AdBlue additive, this new system reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 90 per cent.
Clean bill of health – even in California
The result is an engine which will satisfy stringent emissions limits all over the world, even in especially rigorously controlled U.S states such as California, New York and Vermont, and which will share its technology with other units in the range from 2008 onwards.
This initiative will help Audi to meet its pledge to effect a 20 per cent reduction in C02 emissions across its fleet by 2012.
As the Cross Cabriolet quattro ably demonstrates, the ultra low emission technology demands no sacrifices in performance. Through an eight-speed automatic transmission with a new lever design incorporating a gear selector ‘control wheel’, the SUV study translates 240PS and a healthy 500Nm of torque into a 0-62mph acceleration time of 7.2 seconds and a top speed of 149mph, without ruling out the potential to cover over 38mpg.
When cruising the Cross Cabriolet quattro ensures that the drinks in its heatable and coolable cup holders remain as unshaken as possible through the use of Continuous Damping Control variable shock absorbers first seen in the Q7 SUV, complementing ultra-modern five-link front and transverse link rear suspension similar to the set-up in the A4 and A5.
The Audi drive select adaptive technology that has just become available in the new A4 enables the driver of the Cross Cabriolet quattro to adjust shock absorber settings to suit the prevailing road conditions at the touch of a button, or to leave the system to adapt automatically.
Variable ride height
When the going gets tougher, the Audi drive select system automatically softens the shock absorber settings, and the electric ride height adjustment system comes into play. Capable of varying the body’s height in relation to its 21-inch wheels by up to 40mm at the touch of a button, it works by means of electric motors under each wheel’s spring plate that raise or lower the body. They do so in record time, requiring a maximum of four seconds to reach any pre-selected ride height.
In customary Audi fashion, the various ride control functions are underpinned by quattro four-wheel-drive in its latest form, which directs up to 40 per cent of drive to the front wheels and up to 60 per cent to the rear in normal conditions for the most rewarding drive possible.
Manoeuvres on rough terrain are aided by the mechanical locking centre differential, which can divert up to 65 per cent of power to the front and 85 per cent to the rear when traction is in danger of being compromised.
The Cross Cabriolet quattro is not only exceptionally controllable in the rough, but also impressively rigid thanks to its innovative two-layer double floor structure, which provides the soft-top with the solid foundations of a fixed head car and eliminates the need for conventional stiffening measures that add weight.
The body’s robustness has obvious benefits on tarmac too, making cruising with the space-efficient, lightweight powered soft top stowed neatly behind the rear seats a pleasantly refined experience. During open-air driving, even the draughts around passengers’ necks are quelled by special air vents mounted on the head restraints which compensate for turbulence.
Satellite navigation with help from Google Earth
From the four individual ‘White Stone’ leather-upholstered seats the occupants of the Cross Cabriolet quattro enjoy a quota of space that is currently unmatched by any convertible, even with the roof closed. Angled towards the driver is a high-tech dashboard containing a development of the familiar Multi Media Interface (MMI) system with futuristic satellite navigation technology using photorealistic 3D maps from Google Earth.
Through internet connection, the system not only provides ‘bird’s eye’ mapping that is vastly more detailed, but also eliminates the need for manual entry of a navigation destination. The driver can simply click on an image in the Google Earth user interface and be directed to the identified destination.
The list of technological innovations also includes a Bang & Olufsen sound system with internet radio, which provides access to the many radio stations broadcasting online. Tracks played by these stations can be ‘judged’ by the user, who can give a positive or negative verdict on each at the touch of a button. This helps the system to build a picture of their preferences and to offer a bespoke play list incorporating only the tracks that match them. The internet-based system also enables CD cover illustrations and track and artist background information to be displayed!
When conversation is more important than music, the Cross Cabriolet quattro also offers an intercom facility which removes the need for raised voices, particularly when the roof is lowered. Four microphones pick up the speakers’ voices and relay them at a subtly amplified level via the audio system. Background noise is filtered out to give the most natural voice reproduction possible.

Some renderings of what the ‘Audi A1 Metroproject Quattro’ concept will look like have been leaked.
Summary of the A1 Metroproject Quattro preview car…
Size: 910mm in length (A3 3dr 4,214mm), 1,750mm width (A3 1,765mm), 1,400mm high (A3 1,420mm)
It Combines new, more powerful 150PS version of 1.4 TFSI petrol engine with 30kW / 41PS electric motor driving rear wheels which reduces fuel consumption and emissions by around 15 per cent
The Capacity of lithium-ion batteries makes a range of up to 62 miles possible without petrol engine intervention. Batteries rechargeable via mains socket.
With the engine and electric motor operating simultaneously a torque maximum of 440Nm (petrol engine 240Nm, electric motor 200Nm) is made available. 0-62mph in 7.8 seconds, 124mph top speed, 57.6mpg, 112g/km CO2.
The interior features innovative Audi mobile hand-held device offering mobile telephony, MP3 and video playback and GPS navigation Driver can also input sat-nav destinations and control in-car functions such as heating before leaving home
It features a new take on Audi’s established Quattro technology. The Audi qutro four-wheel drive system is usually a traditional one engine driving four wheels affair. But the 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine under the A1 Metroproject’s bonnet only powers the front wheels. It gives a respectable 148bhp but is not going to help out with back-end traction.
The secret is instead under the boot floor, where lurks a compact 40bhp electric motor, driving the rear wheels.
The A1 Metroproject is a hybrid, too. an extra 40bhp might not sound very much, the real bonus of an electric motor is the instant - and we do mean instant - torque. In the Audi A1 Metroproject’s case, the motor delivers an extra 148lb ft of torque. More than enough to propel what is supposedly an environmentally friendly city-car concept to 65mph in 7.8 seconds. The electric motor can also power the Audi A1 Metroproject entirely on its own at urban speeds, with a range of up to 65 miles thanks to lithium-ion batteries. As with all hybrids the only real downside is the weight penalty; the set-up reputedly adds 70kg to the Metroproject’s overall weight.
The Audi A1 Metroproject is also a ‘plug-in’ hybrid. So it can be recharged at any standard power outlet as well as via the petrol engine. It uses various regenerative techniques to recover energy while driving too, just like the Toyota Prius, and new BMW and MINI EfficientDynamics models. As a result it produces just 112g/km of CO2 and is capable of 57.6mpg. if you do not think that too impressive, remember: we are talking about 148bhp turbocharged petrol engine here, not some kind of diesel. The 1.4 turbo should appear in a refreshed A3 next year, the new A4, and the production A1.
